(Albany, NY - AP) - The state is going ahead with preparations to buy machinery that will allow people with disabilities to vote this fall.

The move comes as the Pataki administration battles the federal government in court over the state's failure to make improvements in hits voting system.

Officials at the Board of Elections say the agency has issued a request for bids as part of the process for purchasing about ten-thousand devices that will allow the disabled to cast ballots in this year's elections.

That was a requirement under the Help America Vote Act adopted after the disputed 2000 presidential election.

New York was last week by the Justice Department for failing to comply with the voting act's requirements. New York lags all other states in meeting the requirements.
