The Catskill Center for Independence applauds Riverside School’s third grade teacher Mr. Ken Sider along with third grade teacher Mr. Zeh and the 2007 third grade class of Riverside School in Oneonta, New York for their in depth look at what it is like to be a person with a disability who uses a wheelchair.
The video link below beautifully illustrates the disability awareness project spearheaded by Mr. Sider. Not only did the project enable these students to experience first-hand what it is like to use a wheelchair, but they discovered for themselves that people who use wheelchairs are just like everyone else. This project also served to expand the knowledge and awareness of staff, faculty, other students and parents of the Riverside School Community about what it might be like to use a wheelchair and the importance of a barrier free environment.
Center staff enjoyed working with Mr. Sider, Mr. Zeh and the students and would like to thank them for allowing us to participate in such a rewarding experience. It is our hope that programs such as this can be replicated in other schools throughout the state!
If you would like more information or to find out how you can develop a similar program please contact Chris Zachmeyer or Laurene Reichardt at the Catskill Center for Independence.
